Bat Medicine represents rebirth, transition, and intuition.

Bat Medicine

Bats are true flying mammals

Bat Medicine offers a gateway to new life and purpose. In facing the darkness before you, find the light in rebirth. One will not grow spiritually until the old parts are gone. This transition maybe very frightening for many. One must face their greatest fears and get rid of the part of their life that no longer is needed. The part that no longer serves them.

The Bat is steeped in the mystery of tribal ritual this is where the power of the bat comes in. Akin to the ancient Buddhist belief in reincarnation, Bat Medicine is the symbol of rebirth, transition into a new life with the power of intuition to answer all questions of life.

The bat is an animal steeped in the dark mystery, and one which arouses unease in some humans because it is related to darkness and the unknown. Some are afraid of it, perhaps because of its association in horror movies with the supernatural and with ritualistic death.

Bats at night

Bats have a bad rap

Bats sleep in a caves or a dark places. This is symbolic of the womb, and the animal’s position hanging upside down parallels that of the unborn self, immersed in darkness.

One cannot make progress by hanging on tightly to the very things that are holding you back. So, face your fears head on, and they will flee from you. Bat is there to help you see in the darkness and to find your way to a new understanding. Face your fears. Be flexible. Prepare for rebirth. The time is now, the power is yours.

If one has chosen and started in a search for a closer walk with Mother Earth, many are relearning the old ways, using the animal medicine/energy, as the Native Americans and Doowans did can be of benefit. To choose which animal energies are right for you, simply take a deep breath, still yourself.

Ask the Great Spirit to send you the Animal Medicine lessons that your inner being needs and to have the knowing, as our ancient people did long ago. Native Americans and Shamans believed that all animals had lessons to teach and had healing or inspirational power. When they held or carried a certain fetish, or meditated on its meaning, they believed they drew the special energy of the animal into themselves.

These people recognized that the bat was highly sensitive to their surroundings and therefore considered a symbol of intuition, dreaming and vision. This made the bat a powerful symbol for Native American shamans and medicine people. Often the spirit of the bat would be invoked when special energy was needed, like “night-sight” which is the ability to see through illusion or ambiguity and dive straight to the truth of matters.

Bat in flight

Bat Medicine the sign of rebirth

Bat Medicine

Let’s face it, the bat isn’t the most popular of animals. In fact, it’s largely misunderstood and therefore many of its symbolic meanings are inappropriately fear-based.

The Native American animal symbolism of the bat comes from a keen observation of this magnificent animal. If Bat Medicine has appeared in your life, it is a call for the end of a way of life and the new beginning of another. The bat is a symbol of death and rebirth because it is a creature that lives in the belly of the Mother Earth. From the Earth womb, like caves it emerges every evening at dusk. Thus, from the womb it is reborn every evening.

Bat Medicine embraces the idea of symbolic death. This ritual death is steeped in the secrets of illusion. Symbolic of the Shaman’s death in which the personal identity and the old ways of life give way to the new.

This initiation brings the right to heal and to be called a Shaman or Medicine Man/Woman. The basic idea of this initiation was to break down all the former notions of “self” that are held by the initiate. This initiation is brutally hard on the body, mind, and spirit. It can be very difficult to find a person who can take the abuse and come through it with their balance intact. These tests could entail physical strength, and psychic ability. Along with having every emotional button pushed and pushed hard, enduring the duress with humility and fortitude. Finally being buried in the earth for one day and night to be reborn without the former ego.

Bat Face Closeup

How can you not love a face like this?

Hanging upside down is a symbol for learning to transpose ones former self into a newborn being. Interesting is that this is also the position that babies assume when they enter the world through the womb of a woman.

When Bat Medicine appears in your life its message may be to examine your surroundings to discern what bounty is being offered to you; then alter your patterns so you can receive this bounty.

Bat is a nocturnal animal, and the night was often considered the home of fears. Home fires and lights are often used to chase back the night and the fears and not facing them and transmuting them. Are you avoiding facing something that is inevitable?

When Bat Medicine flies into your life, transformation of the ego self is about to occur. The old familiar patterns and ideas that have been your truth are about to change. That which once worked for you may no longer. The process of transformation represents a death and a rebirth.

Bat Medicine offers you the wisdom necessary to make the appropriate changes for the birthing of a new identity.

The bat is a sociable animal it can indicate a need for more sociability or increased opportunity with greater numbers of people. It has great auditory perception and can navigate through the dark easily. Their built-in sonar enables them to know what lies beneath the surface.

Those with Bat Medicine have uncanny abilities to discern hidden messages both from people and the environment. Those with Bat Medicine would benefit from yogic practices, especially those related to awakening the Kundalini. When this medicine is fully developed, one’s intuitive and ability to hear spirits. When underdeveloped, psychic perception becomes clouded by imaginings of the mind.

Is this what it means to be Batty?

To many misinformed people think, the bat is a symbol of death, however, try to embrace the positive powers of the bat. The word “medicine” in Native American practice and in the custom of animal medicine refers to the healing aspects that a particular animal brings to our consciousness.

This would mean anything that supports, strengthens, restores, empowers, or revives the spiritual body, as well as the physical body. Once we are aware of what a certain animal represents, then we can take the necessary steps to create changes in our life according to that awareness. Animal Medicine is that which you need to learn right now and the lesson that is coming across your immediate path.

Your attention may be called to one of these animals through television,  conversation, and daily experience. Regardless of how one of these animals comes across your path, study the message and apply to your daily Life . . .

Bat Medicine has a message for you.
