Horse meat-tainted beef has just left the news. We should be so lucky. US beef meat is packed with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, or “superbugs,” according to a government study released in February. It’s just now getting some attention. Probably because of all the testing for horse meat. Let’s see horse meat or super bugs. Great choices a folks! The data hails from 2011, and their just releasing this information two years later. WTF.

The result of testing on ground turkey, pork chops, ground beef, and chicken that’s available at our supermarkets. Beef and a Whole lot More than half of the samples taken were contaminated with superbugs like salmonella and E. coli. The New York Times reports that this represents a “sizable increase.” Yep, super size me. I’m hungry! Truth is that the scientist have warned us about this for years, and presto! What’s the sense of having scientists, if nobody listens to them?

For example, in the samples taken, all salmonella found on raw chicken, 74% was resistant to antibiotics, while in 2002, less than 50% was. Boy, that’s good news, only half were tainted. The findings are sure to increase the backlash against the use of antibiotics in animals raised for meat, but vets who work with the International Food Information Council (which gets money from major food companies) and the US Farmers and Ranchers Alliance (which gets money from veterinary pharmaceutical companies) say the report used small sample sizes and is misleading. And so are the words coming out of their mouths. It’s just one payoff after another. Another disturbing finding is that in all, 87% of the meat tested contained some sort of fecal contamination, either normal or antibiotic-resistant. Beef and a Whole lot more is what you’ll find at your local market. We suggest the local butcher would be a better choice for those that want more beef with less Shit stuff in it. They are tested by the local Health Department once a year and you can bet they are a lot cleaner than the meat-packing companies.

We also suggest rinsing the meat cut under running tap water before cooking. Of course with hamburger this won’t work. So we have our local store grind up a rump roast or another cut of roast to use as hamburger. Sometimes these cuts are on sale for less than the lean hamburger per pound. Most will do it for free while you shop. This way it’s much cleaner and better tasting hamburger meat which comes from one cow and not hundreds. Plus, it has less fat in the mix and no horse meat. Bigger is NOT always better

On the good news side.

A  major of US supermarket chains say they want no part of the genetically modified salmon the FDA has pre approved, or any other Frankenfish the food industry might devise. The FDA is in the final stages of approving a fast-growing fish from AquaBounty Technology that combines two species of salmon and a pouter eel. But yesterday about a dozen supermarket chains, including Trader Joe’s, Aldi, and Whole Foods, announced that they wouldn’t carry the fish even if it’s approved. This is wonderful news but leaves one to wonder how they will know without the labeling? Just take their word for it?

I can’t say if it’s labeled, I can’t see if it’s labeled, What, I can’t hear you. Is it labeled?

Together, the groups that have signed onto the Friends of the Earth’s campaign control roughly 2,000 stores nationwide. Now it’s time for other food retailers, including Wal-Mart, Costco, Safeway, and Belair, to follow suit and let their customers know they will not be selling unlabeled, poorly studied genetically engineered seafood. Don’t hold your breath. The FDA’s preliminary finding indicated that the fish was fully safe, though critics say it hasn’t been sufficiently tested.
